Throne of Glass is a fantasy filled with tension, suspense, mystery, sword-fighting, and mysterious evil killings, which will keep readers wanting to know more. Celaena Sardothien is a trained assassin who has spent the last year as an imprisoned slave in one of the tyrant king's salt mines. One day a cloaked man comes to offer her a chance to win her freedom. However, that freedom will not come easy. Celaena must defeat twenty-three assassins, thieves, and violent criminals in a deadly competition to become the king's champion. When her competitors are slowly murdered one-by-one, Celaena must not only try to stop the vicious violent and bloody murders but must remain one step ahead to stay alive.
The novel is a bit slow in the beginning as Maas develops the storyline but quickly picks up once the Champions start dying. Also, I could have done without Celaena's girlie comments at times as they did not seem fitting of a trained assassin. Overall, I could not put this book down and I longed to read the sequel before even finishing the first book. I highly recommend it for fantasy fans of Lord of the Rings (Tolkien), Sabriel (Nix), His Dark Materials (Pullman), Graceling (Cashore).
